Imola, May 2, 2018 – The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari is getting ready for the arrival of the FIM Motul Superbike World Championship (May 11-13) bringing with it one of the most evenly matched competitions in SBK history.
In the lead is the three-time world champion, Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki). However, thanks to the new regulations introduced this season, his lead could be threatened by at least two of his competitors. Chaz Davies, Rea’s main rival, is ready to face the challenge after his double-win in the last two editions in Imola.
Looking the rankings from 2017 and 2018 after the race at Assen in the Netherlands, which once again precedes the coming round in Imola, helps clarify the situation: Rea has a 30-point lead on Davies, what last year was 84, Marco Melandri (Ducati) is next with only 44 points behind versus last year’s 98, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) lagging by 58 points versus 64. Another important fact to keep in mind is that Rea has 36 points less at this stage, with only 3 wins versus 7, compared to last year.
Above all, Imola has often been asphalt dominated by Ducati, who consider it their home track. In the 2018 round, the company from Bordo Panigale once again will do whatever it takes to impress their many fans that will fill the stands at this year’s round. So far Ducati has done well, winning 17 of 29 races, compared to Honda’s 7, Kawasaki’s 4 and Aprilia’s 1 win from 2001. Among the drivers, the favorites are Carlos Checa and Jonathan Rea with 5 wins, followed by Chaz Davies with 4, the same man with two double-wins in the last two series, Ruben Xaus and Regis Laconi with three, and Tom Sykes with two. After 15 editions held in Imola, each with the highest level of technical and racing excellence, this year should be no different with just as much entertainment as ever.
There is added excitement among fans that can now partake in the end of the race, thanks to this year’s new addition. Paddock ticket holders can now watch the award ceremonies for all categories up close (Superpole SBK, Supersport, Supersport 300 + race 1 SBK on Saturday; SBK races, Supersport, Supersport 300 and Superstock 1000 on Sunday) which until last year were held on a podium in the pit lane and was, therefore, reserved for authorized personnel. This year the stage will be set up in the Paddock and the riders will drive up to it directly from the track. A wonderful initiative that is a unicum in the world of two-wheel motor racing.
